ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

Hi Alissa,

If your building has an outside area that's appropriate, then
photographing and identifying plant and animal species may be a great
outside group activity. Getting people to look and see the diversity all
around them is an useful goal and it is fun to find things and then
exchange information about what they are among the family group. Those
activities can then be extended in galleries or at home.

Has your organization planted native species in the courtyards and
parking lots? That is another great anchor I have seen for outside
exploration and programming.

Weather could be another topic--identifying types of clouds,
temperature, soil testing--all those are outdoor activities that connect
directly to the science topics many organizations cover.

Botany, zoology, weather, geology -- all sciences that would be great
to connect to outdoor programming.

The whole family re-learns how to play 4-square, kid-size basketball HORSE, double dutch jump rope, hula hoops and chalked hop scotch.

In the past I've done things like alka-seltzer rockets, playing with centripetal force (swinging a cup of water around your head), things that are pretty quick, suitable for "drive by" programming and things you wouldn't do inside because they're too wet/messy/tall etc.
