Many years ago, when the Jason project first got started, I remember  
Bob Ballard saying, "Science is a contact sport."  I always thought  
that was a wonderful way of putting it, a sort of antiemetic for all  
the stereotypical images of popular culture feeds us....

It may be, as you say, a way to sell books, but it is refreshing to  
consider some of the outliers :)
