NSF's overall budget is increasing by by $350 million over last year to the current request of $7.373 billion. I don't have a total grasp of what NSF is doing in education, but there has been a clear shift in Informal Science Education funding away from projects to a more research-focused approach that seeks to research effectives strategies for STEM education. Additionally, NSF is initiating some new partnerships and programs that require new funding. For example, NSF plans to allocate $49 million to bring engaging science content, knowledge and applications to more learners via the new Expeditions in Education activity.
I am going to try to find out more regarding what's behind NSF's overall STEM education strategy and how ISE fits into that.
To repeat the info in my earlier note: ISE is being cut about 22%, from $61 million to $48 million, and renamed to Advancing Informal STEM Learning. From the NSF budget document: “AISL (formerly ISE) (-$13.58 million to a total of $47.82 million) will support fewer awards, focusing on the research and model-building contributions of the program to better understand effective means and innovative models for engaging today’s young people and adults in science outside of school settings.”

Would you say this is a gradual trend to squeeze "informal" projects out of
NSF's portfolio, or are all NSF divisions facing similar cutbacks in the FY
2013 budget?
