Eric, Jonah,

David Brooks had a balanced piece on testing recently in the NY Times:

2 cents from Freeman Dyson:

"We must be careful not to discourage our 12 year olds by making them
waste the best years of their lives preparing for examinations."

A few cents of my own:

Memorization is not learning. Science is not a set of facts. Our
school system is failing to produce, encourage, or even allow critical
thinking. This should be the greater scandal.

Critics of high stakes testing in American education: here's a little
grist for the mill.
