ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

Hello -
My name is Bill Trammell. I formerly volunteered at Fort Discovery, the
museum arm of the National Science Center in Augusta GA. I am a retired
chemists who did mainly chemistry demonstrations at Fort Discovery.
Recently, I've been recognized by the American Chemical Society (ACS) for my
outreach efforts in demonstrating and explaining chemistry to the general
public locally as well as nationally and internationally on closed-circuit,
interactive TV. As such, I've been asked to address the ACS Committee on
Public Relations and Communications on my activities.

In discussing my years of doing chemical demos at Fort Discovery, I wanted
to explain how valuable it is to be involved with a science center, since
few chemists do this. I was wondering if you could provide me with some
information I can share with them:
1. Does you museum have a chemistry demonstration area?
2. Do you have any staff member or volunteers who hold a degree in
Chemistry?
3. If so, are they members of the American Chemical Society?
4. How often is your chemistry demo area used?
5. What types of programs do you put on?
6. Do you do specific programs for school groups or children visiting with
their parents on the weekends?
7. Do you have any chemistry-related exhibits?
8. If so, how well are they received by the visitors?
9. Do you host any special events related to chemistry, such as National
Chemistry Week?

I've checked with Christine Ruffo, ASTC's Research Manager, who told me they
have no current data on this. Getting good feedback would be helpful to me.
I will gather this info together and pass it onto Christine, who, I'm sure,
will appreciate it and use it appropriately.

Thanks in advance.
Bill Trammell
