Martin and Beryl,

I am glad to see this discussion. I recently saw a television program from
New Zealand that had a statement in the opening credits that it contained
images of the dead to with an alert for specific cultural groups. Handling
it as Beryl suggests indicates a respect for differences and not just
assuming everyone has the same ideas as "most" staff members. Instilling
institutional respect for differences in perspective is a laudable step.

Best regards,

Carey

Marty, Marty, Marty…you forgot everything you learned in Hebrew school! :-)

Members of the priestly class, the kohanim (hence the last name Cohen for
many of them) are not allowed any contact with the dead. That include
cemeteries. A simple sign that states that the museum has human remains
either on display or in collections will suffice. It will also address
concerns from Native Americans and other cultures for whom this is an issue.
Generally, the orthodox for whom this is a concern will raise it ahead of
time, as this gentleman did.
