We generally avoid sand in our gallery space, like the plague, just because it finds it's way into everything. We use small pebbles in our Dinosaur Dig area and find that it provides guests with a satisfying experience for that type of activity. I have also seen dry corn kernels, rice, etc for pouring activities in classroom settings.

Lisa,

Originally sand was used in our Digsite. Within the first 2 years it was
switched to ground up recycled tire rubber. It has been the perfect
material for our Digsite. There is also the option to purchase new ground
up rubber instead of recycled.

I would like to know what kind of sand others are using for sand boxes or
dino dig areas. We turn a large section of our museum into a giant sand box
for "Sandtastico" on July 4th weekend through the rest of the summer. We
have used masonry sand in the past because it is the right texture, but when
looking it up, it appears that maybe masonry sand has carcinogenic materials
in it? I'm at a loss. We want to provide a safe environment for our kids,
but would hate to cancel this event that has become the highlight of our
summer for the last 3 years. I'd appreciate any opinions or ideas.
