Kim,

We also have developed essentially our own temp labor pool for installs
and odd jobs, but we will also hire from temp agencies and the results
can vary.

When I was traveling as a tech I worked with temp labor, union labor and
internal labor. In some cases the internal labor was a mixed bag
because they had other demands on their time and kept getting called
away. The one union crew I worked with was absolutely fabulous. The
same general crew was hired for each install, so they knew the museum
and could get the resources they needed to do the job. The biggest
issue with the temp labor was that they didn't know the museum, didn't
know where things were, where to get tools or what resources were
available to solve problems. Exhibits are also so different from the
run of the mill temp job that they had no frame of reference for what
was required. I rarely had a problem with the worker, and if I did they
were not hired back the next day. If you can start with hiring temp
workers and then get the good ones to come back each time, or hire them
to your staff as temp workers, you can eventually build a good team.

Subject: using temporary labor for exhibit set up/strike

We are considering using a temp agency to supply us the manpower we need
to set up and strike traveling exhibits. Has anyone had experience
using temp labor for this function and if so, what has your experience
been - good, bad? I have a small exhibits staff so the temp labor would
do the majority of the work
