Making it interactive will increase donations. We added a voice recording to
a fiberglass shark: when people put a donation into its mouth, it played a
few seconds of "Jaws" and said something silly. People would keep putting in
more money until they heard all of the different sayings. In a sense, they
weren't donating, they were purchasing an experience. 

In this situation their interest was not contributing to strengthen the
museum. It was a transaction in which they benefited as did the museum.

The Montshire Museum is looking for ideas and resources for  
establishing a donation box in our lobby/gallery. We want to encourage  
philanthropic gifts of all sizes, make it interesting and possibly  
interactive, and also include a visual message about how much we have  
raised toward our annual fund goal. Does anyone have any information  
to share about successful (or not so successful) strategies?
