Would you like 100 FREE Galileoscopes for your organization?

Astronomy From the Ground Up (AFGU), a hands-on astronomy collaboration involving Astronomical Society of the Pacific, The National Optical Astronomy Observatory, and ASTC, will have 15 batches of Galileoscopes (100 scopes per batch) to distribute on an application basis to attendees of the November 3 session, Galileoscopes Around the World at the 2009 ASTC Annual Conference in Ft. Worth.

The Galileoscope (https://www.galileoscope.org/gs/) is a high-quality, low-cost telescope kit developed for the International Year of Astronomy 2009 by a team of leading astronomers, optical engineers, and science educators. This 2-inch (50-mm) diameter, 25- to 50-power refractor telescope allows you to see the same celestial wonders that inspired Galileo Galilei 400 years ago, including lunar craters and mountains, the moons of Jupiter, the phases of Venus, Saturn's rings, and countless stars invisible to the unaided eye.

What do you have to do? Attend the session, Galileoscopes Around the World, Tuesday, Nov. 3, from 9 to 10:15 AM, in the Ft. Worth Convention Center. Following this workshop, fill out an online application on behalf of your institution, including an activity plan of how you will use the Galileoscopes. Applications will close Nov., 15; you will be notified of your status by Nov. 20, 2009. Selected applicants will need to sign an Expectations Form that confirms the intended use of these telescopes, as well as the intention to report back about your program. In return, you will receive 100 Galileoscopes shipped to your institution for use in your programming.

Contact Margaret Glass, mglass [at] astc.org if you have additional questions.
