That is the basis of a Thorton Scanner.  Actually, you put the mirrors 
on low RPM motors with
potentiometers controlling speed and you can get some interesting shapes 
if you use three
mirror/motors.  This is much much better, BTW, then using mirrors on 
speaker cones.

Back to the fog question - the cheaper DJ type foggers do leave 
residue.  The best fogger
I have seen was built in Quebec, Canada and used a water based mist.  
They used
this at the International Laser Display awards several years and I was 
impressed with it.
No residue and doesn't make a fog that is so thick you can't see 
anything else.
Of course, it wasn't cheap like the oil-based fog machines.
