I just ordered some equipment from a well known scientific supplier for 
teachers in CT. I was very surprised that they charged me CA tax, and 
asked why? They have no stores here. The answer was because California 
told us to.  That's a first for me. I guess they don't carry the weight 
of Amazon and stores I've dealt with in NY, MI, and elsewhere.  Sounds 
phony to me.
