Electronics Workbench at Science Museum of Minnesota
Science Museum of Minnesota's electronics workbench, designed some years ago
by Jay Newlin, would be an excellent complement to any electronics take
apart. The workbench provided visitors with a number of electronics parts, like
transistors, resistors, and capacitors, as well as lights, fans, small
motors, which could be hooked up into circuits that helped visitors learn the
functions of these different components. It was a great open-ended experience
because you literally had to experiment to make a successful circuit -- it was
fun (for me). SMM designed small cards that suggested starting points without
giving answers.

Many communities have FreeCycle listserves. Put up a freecycle
request for broken mechanical/electronical stuff and I guarantee
you'll have as much as you can bear to pick up--as well as a great
advertisement for the program itself
