Peter, I agree with your comments, but disagree about age, particularly in terms of exhibits that are representative of new or cutting edge technology.  This is an interesting question given that year after year we have discussions online about how to keep exhibits current.  Age becomes inherent (but not the driver).

Martin,

Exhibits are removed and/or renovated when:

They are failing in their inspiration/education role;
They are maintenance problems
They do not fit a new thematic plan.
They are scruffy and let the ambiance down


I don't know of any science center that removes because of age, per se.
