Has anyone ever tried the old Victorian school slate and slate pencil 
for this purpose? Set in a simple wooden frame and made of dark 
coloured slate rock, which splits easily into thin sheets. The 
'pencil' being a short stick of the same material, sharpened to a 
blunt point. I've noticed that they write clearly, are almost 
indestructible and can be wiped clear with just your fingers, leaving 
no mess at all.
