ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

I've heard from a number of people about efforts they're making to help both
visitors and staff avoid driving and cut carbon emissions in the process.
These included ridesharing programs for employees and active support for
extension of a subway line that would help people reach the science center.

Fawn Warner from the Discovery Center of Springfield, Missouri, reports that
not only is their building LEED certified, but they've installed a bike
rack, added a shower to encourage employees to bike to work, added
"preferred carpool parking" space, and write to chaperones encouraging them
to carpool. City busses have bike racks and many are being converted to run
on bio-diesel, she says. The bus system also offers group passes so school
groups can more easily use public transportation. "We are also implementing
several exhibits on different types of motors and how they work (combustion
vs solar vs sterling), and alternative energy sources, such as solar and
wind," she write. "We are in the process of creating signage that will point
these features of our green building out to visitors."

In addition, Teresa Eastburn at the National Center for Atmospheric Research
in Boulder sends a reminder that NCAR is a prime source of information about
fossil fuels and atmospheric science; Shelly Ryan, a recent museum studies
graduate from California, reports that she's getting trained to facilitate
discussion groups around the film An Inconvenient Truth; and Jim Spadaccini
of Ideum reports that his business has converted to windpower to help
achieve its zero net carbon emissions goal.

Thank you for your news. It's especially welcome today, when it's nearly 100
degrees (F) here in Washington, DC!

Wendy
