Assessing Cultural Impacts of Museums (Canada)
Found in the October 2004 MEM Issue under Ongoing Research

Research Question: What is a 'culture of sustainability' and what
transformations are needed to ensure museums contribute to it? Using a
Critical Assessment Framework developed by the Working Group on Museums
and Sustainable Communities (W.G.M.S.C.), three organizations will
collect and assess data related to outcomes of museum initiatives using
three lenses: individuals, communities and institutions (museums).
Others are welcome to join the project.

Sites:

a) Royal Saskatchewan Museum, Regina, Saskatchewan. - using a
high-school youth forum to assess reactions to The Human Factor, a
permanent exhibit about social and environmental issues

b) Biosphere, Montreal, Quebec - assessing the impacts of a youth
council on individual, community and institutional outcomes

c) Kamloops Museum and Archives, Kamloops, British Columbia - assessing
a range of cultural programs.

Time Span: This is a multi-phase project, with the first phase results
due by Spring, 2005.

exhibits that have the goal of influencing social change. >>
