From my own experience, silicone oil is Really Yukky to clean up, but
unless the exhibit breaks it will last essentially forever.
 
The Science Museum in London England has a really gorgeous
air-bubbles-in-oil exhibit. It's truly huge, and the kids make bubbles
using big pumps. They call it "Slow Bubbles"; it's in their "Launch Pad"
gallery. There's a photo here:
