Sorry to lag on responding to this question.

The Berkshire Museum links all school programs to the MA and NY state
frameworks and we list them under each program description in our school
program brochure. In addition to being in print material, the info is
also available on our website in the educators' resources. On the web we
give full descriptions of what students will be doing in the program.
Here we write out all of the corresponding frameworks (not just list the
numbers). We've find that by doing so we are meeting the needs of
teachers who want to know how our programs connect to what they are
doing in the classroom, and of course Administrators, who want to know
how the trip is relevant.

On a new topic, we just revised and an environmental education
curriculum guide (Living Landscapes) that links directly to core
classroom subjects--science, math, visual and English language arts. The
idea is to use (or should I say articulate how) fun, experiential
(outdoor) learning to teaches the basics. It also lists all the
frameworks that connect for each lesson. We have found teachers are
pleased (relieved) to have these included. We worked with over 15
teachers in an advisory group and 50 field testers (teachers) who all
wanted One-stop-shopping, so there is no need for them to cross
reference or to look up anything up--everything is right there. The
reality, as they expressed it, is pressure to meet standardized testing.
Teachers, more now than ever, are seeking inspirational educational
practices that engage kids meaningfully, AND also satisfy what they have
to cover in the classroom. We try to make it as easy as possible to meet
both needs.

Best, Maria

At the Museum of Science Boston, we have linked programs and exhibits to
the ITEA Standards for Technological Literacy, the Massachusetts Science
and Technology/Engineering Framework, the National Science Education
Standards, and soon the NCTM Math standards (see
http://www.mos.org/doc/1353).

We decided on three catagories of how closely we address a standard.
* Primary standards are reserved for those standards that were
identified in the development process and were central to the exhibit or
program.
* Secondary standards have strong connections to the exhibit, but were
identified after the fact.
* Reference standards may require some work on the part of the educator
to highlight, but we felt there was a connection.

The other discussion we've been having is: do we identify the standards
for the exhibit as a whole or for the individual
components/activities/interactives? We have opted for exhibit-wide
listings partly because of the time involved in going through component
by component and partly because our Field Trip Guide database was set up
with an exhibit or program as the record unit. On the other hand, in a
large exhibit, there may only be a few (or one) components that address
a particular standard. I'd still be interested in figuring out a
practical way to identify standards by components as that seems like it
would be the most meaningful.

We also haven't done much research on how useful this information is.
I'd be glad to hear if anyone else has looked at how educators are using
standards connections.
