Hi Vicki,

We have a very small and simple exhibit entitled "Calorie Scale". This is a sort of proportional balance with colored weights that are equivelent to the calorie amounts in different foods and also exercise. The food weights are made from red plastic and the exercise weights are made of green plastic.

The number of calories in each food or burned in the case of the exercises are engraved in each weight.

The balance platforms are also colored; the one on the left is colored red where as the one on the right is colored green.

Kids or adults can pile weights on the two sides and see if, over time, they will gain weight, lose weight, or remain weight stable according to the amount of exercise and food intake shown.

There is no attempt to make this complicated; no electronics or digital read-outs, just a big pointer that shows whether or not you will gain or lose.

The exhibit has been successful however if I had to do it again I would have used bolder graphics that more clearly showed the effects on the body of excessive weight gain or for that matter, loss.

Hope this helps!

> I'm wondering if anyone out there in informal scienceland has seen or knows of successful exhibits on fitness and/or nutrition for kids? I'm interested in exhibits in science centers, children's museums, or wherever.
