I vote for the building toy that lets you assemble tracks, tubes, and
holes for marbles into elaborate Dr. Seussian structures. It has come
out in various materials, combinations, assortments of special
features, names over the years. Of all the toys my daughters had,
this is the one that made everyone--3-year-olds to teenagers to
Ph.D.s--happy for the longest time. From the clean-up point of view,
built-in storage for the pieces and marbles would appeal to parents.
I've always thought that there ought to be a version that makes
different musical tones as the marble travels or drops different
distances. Also a version using water to use in bath or sandbox.

PS Just asked one of those daughters--now a 20-something
designer--what she'd have gone for in a museum shop as a kid. She
suggests bins (like coffee bean dispensers, say) that let you
dispense interesting small-size raw materials for science and art
projects: feathers, seeds, nuts and bolts, rocks, fossils, beads...
