Hi Harry,

This is a constant problem. While easy access and good tricks in changing the bulbs are always good to have, reducing the change cycle is also an effective way to handle this problem. We have gone in the direction of using a special class of fixture made by Indi Lighting. These use a very special lamp made by Philips called a "white SON" lamp. it's a 50 watt HPS (High Pressure Sodium) that give excellent color rendition, similar to that produced by a quartz halogen lamp. I know that you might think that this light will be harsh but it's not; in fact these lamps are good enough that the Kroger grocery chain uses them in their produce section here in Ann Arbor. These lamps are very energy efficient (three times better than Incandescent) and they last at least 12,000 hours. The latter means that you only have to change them about every 4 years. We have one fixture here that has been running for five years!

The lamps are also good in that they don't produce UV to any extent. The fixtures are like any track fixtures and are very focusable. They do require the use of either Indi or Juno light track. The latter is one of the more common types in use.

Good luck and no, we are NOT paid spokespeople!

> Our new facility will have some light fixtures hung at 22' from Unistrut. Some of the fixtures will be above areas that are not easily accessible from directly below.

> Any ideas on what type of equipment could be used to gain access to the fixtures? It would also be helpful to hear how other museums handle their setups as well.
