GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

The National Optical Astronomy Observatory is seeking a Science Education 
Specialist to play an active role in NOAO programs in the Public Affairs 
and Educational Outreach Department.  This position will be based at NOAO 
Tucson.

This is a unique opportunity to work in a number of high visibility, 
high-priority programs at NOAO. NOAO provides unique science programs for a 
variety of formal and informal audiences. There is a strong emphasis on 
educator professional development and research experiences for teachers. 
This position will provide opportunities for professional growth as NOAO 
maintains an active national and international presence in science 
education. Current NOAO programs which the position will work with directly 
include: "Hands On Optics: Making an Impact with Light" (informal science 
education), "Teacher Leaders in Research Based Science Education" (teacher 
professional development and research experiences), and "Investigating 
Astronomy" (instructional materials development). The Science Education 
Specialist will help to design and maintain NOAO outreach, professional 
development, and curriculum development programs, and also act as liaison 
between NOAO scientists and science education educators.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    * Professional development for teachers and science center educators in 
the area of optics and astronomy research
    * Working with NOAO science outreach program representatives and NOAO 
researchers to coordinate programs at NOAO
    * Gathering input from NOAO astronomers for the development of formal 
and informal education programs
    * Assisting in recruiting participants for programs
    * Assisting and coordinating development of new programs
    * Grant writing for science education

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

    * Master's degree in a physical science (Physics or Astronomy 
preferred) AND four years science education leadership experience or 
science education outreach experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of 
experience, training and/or education in astronomy education.
    * Significant experience with science data and investigations and with 
web-based technologies
    * Ability to assist in testing new educational products and programs
    * Ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of people
    * Comprehensive knowledge of K-12 science education standards and 
practices
    * Skill in coordinating and administering science education programs
    * Ability to translate and communicate astronomy research to a lay 
audience
    * Advanced college-level knowledge of astronomical research, areas of 
current research emphasis, astrophysical techniques, and astronomical 
instrumentation

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
    * Six years of educational program experience
    * Ph.D. degree in a physical science (Astronomy or Physics preferred)
    * Experience with astronomy or physical science outreach programs.
    * Experience with teacher professional development programs in physical 
science
    * K-12 teaching experience
