I had pulled the web page for the Royal Canadian Mint and noticed the
compositions changed starting with 2000. I didn't put two and two together!

Thanks!

Dante

We use Canadian coins in an elementary magnets workshop. We contacted a
local Brinks (armored car service) office and found that they sorted and
culled coins for banks. They have tons of Canadian coins and are always
willing to give us some (about $5 worth each year) after we explained
the educational use. Also, only some of the Canadian coins are
magnetic. Apparently, they have, as the US did, changed the composition
of the coins. So, you need coins prior to a certain date.
Unfortunately, I can't remember the year. If you get them from a Brinks
type place it doesn't matter b/c the way they cull out the old coins is
with a magnet, so you are sure that they work!

I have a special request to any of my Canadian colleagues who are
planning to attend this year's ASTC conference in San Jose later this
week.

Ever since I learned that the alloy composition of Canadian coins gave
them magnetic properties different from American money, I always held on
to a few quarters or nickels that got into my loose change. (The others
I would just bury in a roll of coins and hope the bank wouldn't
notice...C'mon, we've all done that ;-) That worked well for a demo or
impromptu dialogue. Well, this fall I would like to use that property
for an activity in one of our inquiry-based electricity & magnetism
workshops. Which means I will need lots of coins.

Surprisingly, I found out it's not that easy to buy a roll of Canadian
coins down here. I was told by one bank that I would need to drive up
to Windsor, Ont. So if I can't get to the coins, maybe the coins can
come to me...

Please reply to me off-list if you can buy a few rolls of coins at your
local bank and bring them to the conference. Hey, I won't even bother
with exchange rates! It would be a big help!

Thanks a lot, and see you in San Jose!
