We had some fun role-playing a spider catching it's food. Kids have asked things like, how can a spider tell what is shaking the web - it could be a leaf falling, wind or food. So you can get them to feel for themselves the different kinds of vibrations.

Try stringing a human size web with stretchy rope. Call on one volunteer to be a spider. Shield their eyes so that it is difficult for them to see. String one end of the rope from the web to their hands. While doing this, props and costume pieces can help illustrate various spider adaptations. Another volunteer or several volunteers can be things that disturb the web. (examples: bounce a ball on it, pull steadily as if wind is blowing, hit various parts as if rain were falling) One try crawling through it as struggling food. It's fun and kind of surprising how easy it is to feel and determine each different kind of vibration.

Hello everyone!

Has anybody got any good ideas or past experiences on how to demonstrate, in a fun way, some of the workings of a spider.

This could cover anything that is spider related, from web building to moulting, jumping to sensing.....

Also - we'd like to look at how spiders move. Has anybody ever demonstrated how hydraulic pressure works and how did you do it??

Looking forward to hearing from. HAPPY and PEACEFUL NEW YEAR to yous all.
