Hi Sam,

My father did some research on women in outdoor education programs,
learning things like mountaineering, rock climbing, etc, and how their
learning was affected by having coed courses vs women-only courses,
however, science obviously wasn't the focus.

If I were you, I'd send an email to someone at the Society of Women
Engineers. Their website is http://www.swe.org. They sponsor lots informal
science education programs with schools and other organizations around the
country (such as Girl Scouts), and seem to have a lot of success. I
wouldn't be surprised if some research has been built off of their far
reaching activities. I personally know a few women who had opprotunity to
participate in activities sponsored by SWE, who later went on to get
advanced engineering degrees, so clearly influence is being had, and girls
are taking well to the women teaching women methods.

Sorry I couldn't be more specific, but hopefully they can offer some
insight for you.

Hello all!

I had the following request come in re: women, career choices, and
out-of-school experiences~

""In searching the literature concerning females and informal science
education, I have not found specific references to girls choosing
careers in physical sciences based on their out of school science
activities.""

Does anyone know of any references I could send on? It's a great idea,
and if there's some relevant research I'd like to peruse it as well...

Thanks a gajillion!

Sam
