Hi Valerie,

McMaster-Carr  <http://www.mcmaster.com/>  sells
fiberglass rods that should be "springy"  and strong enough
to do the trick.

If those don't work, I'd suggest studying the tapes of some old
Ed Sullivan shows to pick up some pointers.
