November 27, 1999 To all our breastfeeding-supportive colleagues: Recent events/decisions made by ICEA prompt us to have to resign our positions as Consultants to this organization. We feel that our friends in the breastfeeding community need to be aware of our decision in order to understand that we do so with reluctance. However, continuing to lend our names to the organization may negatively affect our respective reputations as supporters of breastfeeding, as vocal supporters of the WHO Code, and as persons who see no point in accepting advertising from companies whose profits derive from bottle-feeding and/or the sale of equipment used to bottle-feed an infant or young child. Whether the actions undertaken in ICEA's name derived from the decision of one or two individuals or the entire Board is, unfortunately, beside the point. We recognize, however, that implying Board approval/endorsement in its absence suggests additional difficulties for the organization which can only be put right by the entire membership. Persons who have presumed, as we did, that ICEA fully supported and endorsed the WHO Code and the statement on breastfeeding which they adopted years ago may wish to reconsider their own involvement with ICEA. We continue to wait for acknowledgement by ICEA of our recent letters regarding the actions that have prompted our resignations. Sincerely, Kathleen G.
