this isn't exactly list topic so please reply to me directly. my sil just gave birth at 28 weeks to a 2#12oz baby girl (vaginal/natural)- early due to toxemia (according to her dr). babe's in NICU; mom's pumping every 3 hrs, and nurse on her floor had her throw away the 1st couple of pumpings bc it wasn't ENOUGH!!!! neonatology nurse hit the roof and assured my sil that every little bit is important. my question, that the drs won't/can't answer or my sil doesn't understand, is why is this baby still just on glucose water (IV)- it's been 36 hrs?? the hospital and region in general aren't terribly breastfeeding friendly, in general, but why aren't they feeding the baby?? i went through the Breastfeeding Answer Book which addresses everything from pumping to getting the baby to breast the 1st time to dealing w/ mom's emotions about a premature baby. but it doesn't say anthing about not feeding the baby. i'm obviously missing something here- what is std NICU policy about delayed feeds? in a way it makes sense bc babes don't get a tremendous amount of calories w/ colostrum until the milk comes in, but they do get SOMETHING other than sugar!
