Dear Cindy,

I am responding to your e-mail of May 30, 1998. Please feel free to share
this response with others as you wish.

The graphic portraying a mother bottle feeding a baby has been removed from
ADA's Web Site. I understand your concern for the usage of the
bottle-feeding graphic, however graphics for our Web Site are limited. The
American Dietetic Association DOES NOT INTEND for this graphic to 'promote'
bottle-feeding over breast-feeding. It WAS SIMPLY a graphic to grasp the
attention of Internet surfers.

"It is the position of The American Dietetic Association (ADA) that public
health and clinical efforts to promote breast-feeding should be sustained
and strengthened. ADA strongly encourages the promotion and advocacy of
activities that support longer duration of successful breast-feeding, in
order to optimize the indisputable nutritional, immunological,
psychological, and economic benefits." (The complete position paper is
available on ADA's Web Site at http://www.eatright.org/adap0697.html).

It's also important to know that the daily 'Eat Right Tip' is short and
simple and originates from ADA's 60 second radio spot 'Eating Right Minute'
on WBBM NewsRadio 78 in Chicago, Illinois. Therefore, the tip is not
designed to be in-depth and actually, the tip in question did not mention
bottle- or breast-feeding. It focused on the nutrient requirements for the
mother-to-be.

In addition, the ADA is actively involved in all levels of promoting good
nutrition and healthy lifestyles, especially through our professional
literature, media outreach, consumer books and Web Site. ADA's Web Site and
catalog feature numerous resources, such as fact sheets, position papers,
and consumer brochures and publications.

Other 'Eat Right Tips' regarding infant/toddler nutrition can be found at:

     http://www.eatright.org/erm032497.html

Thank you for your comments. I hope you realize that we are working toward
the same goals.

Sincerely,

To Whom it may concern :

I was shocked to find a picture of a mom bottle feeding her baby on your
web page located at http://www.eatright.org/erm051398.html.
You main page located at http://www.eatright.org/ states "The ADA and
its National Center for Nutrition and Dietetics promote optimal
nutrition, health and well being."

Bottle feeding does NOT provide optimal nutrition , health and well
being for infants and I think that placing a picture of a bottle feeding
mom on your site is an contraindication to what you say you promote.

Please consider replacing this graphic with a mom breastfeeding. This
type of graphic will portray what is stated that you promote.

Thank you for your time
