Last week I had a prenatal pt taking the WIC breastfeeding class with her two year old in tow. This woman had taken the class when preg. with the now two year old, but did not breastfeed. She just didn't want to, yet when she delivered the baby, the midwife (according to the mom) who really wanted the mom to try, told her, your baby is starving (this was a newly emerged punkin) and tried to force the baby to the breast. The mom says it hurt. Well, I don't know what really and truly went on here, but this is what the mom reports two years later. She sat through the class this time, and I hope something will get her to try again. However, I NEVER tell moms that their babies are starving at birth. In fact, I say babies aren't that hungry but they do want to suck. I think that the midwife might have thought that appealing to the mom's wanting to feed her baby bec. it was starving would have goten her to give the breast, but I don't think this was the best way.It didn't work, in any case. So, wise ones, are babies starving at birth? I don't think so....
