Nofia, it would be hard to judge from this distance since there are so many things to consider. e.g. what was the birth wt? what was the discharge wt? how does the baby look on the wt/ht graph? (proportional? small like parents?) how does the wt look as a percentage of birth wt? Setting deadlines is sure hard on the mother's b.pressure! Seems like a more appropriate approach is to do wt check every 4-5 days making sure the output continues as well as it seems to be going. Seems like much ado about nothing, if output is good, baby is gaining, baby is contented, and mom is taking time to get rest and eat nutritious foods. Just my .02 worth. I have a mother, parity 5, who has a small build, weighs about 100 lbs, and is about 5' 1". None of her first four children breastfed over a month, because she was told she had "skim milk" for one and IMS for following three. Now, I have helped her get almost to the 1 month without any supplements (bravo!) and she is concerned because at 2 weeks baby had gained only 200 g over weight at hospital release. Baby has wet diapers and many bowel movements, good color, feeds every three hours/daytime, 5 hours/night. Nurse will demand baby go on supplements if baby not wg 600 g at next weight check (4 days- 7 days from now). Is 600 g the expected weight gain for a newborn for one month? I had previously read minimum weight gain at 400 g. (1 lb) Please, give me sources to arm mother with at next check. I have repeated the diaper rule (6-8 wet, 5-10 bowel) to this lady so many times, and she has answered that the baby is wetter than any older siblings had ever been. Also, mother is suffering from high blood pressure since birth, and this keeps her under the nurse's nose. Nurse's nudging her about wg is stressing for sure. I am NOMAIL,so please reply to me and the list! Thanks! mailto:[log in to unmask] Nofia Altman
