This was pointed out to me at a meeting yesterday. In the very same December Redbook with the breastfeeding cover, this statement appears on p. 155: "SIDS Alert: Family-bed proponants have long insisted that sleeping with infants reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (also known as 'crib death') because it promotes breast-feeding and helps synchronize sleep patterns. Forget it, advises the American Academy of Pediatrics. According to their recent policy statement, bed sharing may actually INCREASE the risk of SIDS, in part because adult bedding and mattresses may be softer than those designed for infants, providing greater opportunity for suffocation." I will have to go back and reread what was actually said in Pediatrics. I think it was the editorial in the issue with James McKenna's article on cosleeping that they are quoting here. It would be nice if some pediatricians could address this subject with Redbook. Thanks, those of you who attended the recent conference, for sharing the highlights with us!
