I personally would not recommend a nipple shield if the mother has sore or
damaged nipples. They can only potentially compound the problem.  I am
especially leery of the shield usage with sore/damaged nipples in case of the
development of yeast or some other bacteria entering the nipple, setting up a
good mastitis case or whatever else.
