I have tried to keep current on postings and do not recall these article being shared, so I will apologize now if I'm repeating someone else. I read an abstract from LLLI, Feb.1997; vol 16, number 3. The article is: Gastric empting in pre-term infants: the effect of breast milk fortifier by A.K. Ewer and V.Y.H. Yu. Acta Pediatr 1996; 85:112-15. The article compared breast milk alone and with fortifier in emptying time for two groups of premies. Their conclusion was: " Half-empting time for breast milk alone was 21_+ 3.6 minutes; half-emptying time for fortified breast milk was 48_+4.0 minutes. Breast milk emptied faster than fortified breast milk in 10 of 11 patients. This longer empting time could be of concern in infants with feed intolerance. The authors suggest avoidiing fortifier until a baby is able to tolerate expressed breast milk well and discontinuing its use temporarily for babies demonstrating feed intolerance." This might be an article the NICU people would like to read and show their coworkers. Ann Perry RN IBCLC
