Got a call from a mom who came to our LLL meeting here last week. She is very much an attachment parenting mom. Had a home birth. No solids till 8 months, baby in a sling all the time. Well, her son is now 11 months old and 3 weeks ago he abruptly stopped nursing. She took him to the doctor when the strike first occured and all they could figure is teething pain. She is pumping 6 times a day and using homeopathics for the baby's discomfort. He refuses to nurse. She wears him all day in a sling with her shirt open. Cannot bathe with him as her home has no tub. I don't know what to tell this mom. I mean the baby is almost at his first birthday. She is heart broken and wants to start nursing again. Can he be expected to ever resume breastfeeding after 3 weeks of a nursing strike? Should she stop pumping and comsider him weaned? She had always expected him to wean when he was around three. Oh yes, the Doctor did find an ear infection in the baby this week and it is being treated, but he still won't nurse even in his sleep. Help! Nancy Sherwood LLL Perth, Australia
