Hi all, I have a question that is nagging me bc I'm worried about this baby. Baby is 22 days old. Birth weight 9lbs 4oz, down to 7lbs, 14oz on day 18... (that 14.9% loss) mom reports little to no breast changes, no feelings of "milk coming in" (her phrase for let down) during feeds, occassionally between feeds, baby had no wet diaper days 14-15 and has two wet per day with pink staining since I got her on a q2hr feeding plan with breast compressions, relatching, switching sides when this sleeeeeeeppppppyyyyy baby fall asleep after a minute on the breast, baby had infrequent stools since birth then went a week days 11-18 with no bowel movement. Mom's nipples are quite large (nipple itself is 2.5cm at least and very square)and getting flattened with cracking on upper ridge. I managed to get baby latched on with no pain, mom quite surprised it didn't hurt, but doesn't seem to get it that if we can get him on pain free once, she has to relatch and relatch to get to painfree at every feed -- just leaves him "on" even when it's not on and hurts... Baby lost 6oz between days 15 and 18 -- Mom says she spoke with MDs on three occassions now, twice in person twice and most recently on phone, that are NOT at all concerned about this baby; one didn't have any idea what the pink in the diapers could be, one said it's "brick dust" and is NORMAL, also told her weight loss is normal in the first MONTH neither wants to see the baby --- I insisted she have the baby reweighed after the two days of no wet diapers when the doctors didn't want to see him for another WEEK! Mom is acting like she thinks I'm a nut case for worrying her about this baby since the doctors all feel he is fine (two haven't laid eyes on him EVER!!! though he does look good, no jaundice, skin tone okay, eyes bright when awake, fontenal smooth not sunken, mouth slightly dry) and mom just wants to stop worrying about it and relax...isn't interested in pumping, absolutely against formula, thinks things are fine, better for not worrying all weekend (ie ignoring me all weekend)... Questions: 1) is this baby in trouble? 2) when is FTT, FTT? I know the rule of thumb is a month, but in my New Breastfeeding Answer Book, pg. 116 this baby has all the signs of serious trouble for the failing to thrive before a month category... 3) I thought brick dust was a sign of dehydration? 4) what would others, both MDs and LLLL/LCs recommend at this point? thanks, I need to know if I'm overreacting here....
