Our newly formed support group in Fajardo, a small town east of San Juan, is very small. One of the moms is very interested in creating the group and is the contact person as I work full-time far from the town. Moms call her for group information and help. She is getting very frustrated as moms who she meets on the street hear of her interest in breastfeeding and say "I wanted to breastfeed, but the doctor (or the nurse) told me I couldn't because... (and usually it is incorrect information)." What is interesting is that as a HCP, I get frustrated that other HCP's think so little of breastfeeding that they don't get informed (can you imagine a Pediatrician not up-to-date on Immunization information?). But - this mom is NOT a HCP - and she gets frustrated with the moms. She calls it "selective obedience". How come, she says, these same people continue smoking even though the doc told them to quit, or continue eating high-fat foods even though the dietician explained to them the whys and wherefores, and continue giving babies bottles in bed even when the dentist tells them about bottle-mouth syndrome, but when these same people tell them they can't breastfeed because... they follow the instructions!? Don't have an answer - just more questions... Jeanette Panchula, BA-SW, RN, LLLL, IBCLC Puerto Rico (where it was a great day to go to the beach...)
