FROM: Sturgess, Frances Coulter TO:[log in to unmask] SUBJECT: how much to pump/feeding techniques/bott DATE: 02-18-97 16:12 EST PRIORITY: Hi all, I agree with Chanita--and others re: let the baby be the guide for amounts to feed, AND that we need to lovingly educate moms and the other caretakers (sitters, grandparents, dads, sibs, etc) on *how to use a bottle* regardless of whether its ebm or abm. A great starting point for this is Child of Mine, Feeding with Love and Good Sense, by Ellyn Satter, RD, MSW, Bull Publishing. Its available at most bookstores. I used to recommend it as a shower gift, but it gives too much credence to *highly acceptable substitutes* and equivalency/healthy babies/you've enough to feel guilty about making childcare choices etc etc without feeling guilty about brfdg...I still recommend it, but with restrictions/explanations. It has the charts for amounts and growth, but it *also* shows the incredible range of "normal" intake not only from baby to baby but from day to day on the same infant, which certainly helped me to "go with the flow" :') so to speak and not get "anal retentive" about amounts. I hope she revises it soon to get a stronger breastfeeding advocacy component, as it is clear she supports brfdg and is very knowledgeable *once mom makes the decision*. It is dated 1986 and many brfdg refs predate the '80s. *However* she makes a *great* case for how to see/feel infant cues and the division of responsibility for infant feeding between parent (presents appropriate food) and infant (eats or refuses to appetite, and is respected to know how full he/she is). There are some heartrending case examples of infants being syringe fed or having their arms tied or swaddled so they can't interfere with the feeding process that she gives on how *not* to feed.
