I usually do a lot of lurking.... I would appreciate it if there was some
discussion on promoting breastfeeding in preterms (32wk and older). I know
there are studies and information on this topic which support successful
breastfeeding. However the nurses in my unit,a level 2/3 see breastfeeding
as nice if it works but if it doesn't there's always a bottle. My concerns
are supporting successful breastfeeding and also supporting an infant who
needs fluids, who can be sleepy at the breast and who has a poor latch or
will not latch. Our neonatologist who is very pro breastfeeding, has a
bottom line of infant health above all else. If a infant can suck on a
bottle nipple the neo would prefer that an NG tube not be used. Many of the
nurses see themselves as intensive care nurses so there can be limited time
and patience for promoting BF. Can both issues come out a winner?
