Re the long article in the February 3, 1997 issue of TIME. "Fertile Minds :
From birth, a baby's brain cells proliferate wildly, making connections
that may shape a lifetime of experience. The first three years are
critical."

I am shocked to find that Breastfeeding is never even mentioned as one of the
most important ways to optimize a child's health, intelligence, and
social/emotional potential. The unique composition of fatty acids,
phospholipids, amino acids and other nutrients in breastmilk and its relation
to brain development were not even realized. The impact on the infant's
visual system, the IQ difference in breastfed babies, and the superior health
of breastfed children - which clearly impacts ultimate growth and development
- were not even discussed! Mothering through breastfeeding also facilitates
attachment and bonding and is an ideal method of nurturing as well as
nourishing children.

As important as an optimum prenatal environment would be to a fetus and
newborn, breastfeeding is to a baby and child. I urge you to include this
important information in future issues.

Sincerely,
