I received a call from a WIC PC yesterday evening. She had a client with a 6-day-old infant, bili 18. Pediatrician suggested pumping and feeding EBM for 18 hours. Ped. told the mother that EBM was different than directly-nursed milk, and that it was more effective in treatment of jaundice. Could someone please shed some light on this reasoning??? BTW, ped. has not even suggested ABM, and has told the mother that the baby needs the breastmilk. Neither the PC nor I are familiar with this ped.-- he must be new in town or have a small practice.
