"PS One of the Neo docs call this "Fanatic Net" instead of Lactnet......so you can understand our situation...They absolutely feel that bottle feeding is necessary prior to breastfeeding in all preemies and they do not believe in nipple confusion or prefrerence..etc etc. We really want to get on line with supporting breastfeeding in our hospital...but the Neo's are a big obstacle...any ideas? Donna" Donna, my condolences for having to put up with such ignorance. It is amazing to me how threatened some people are by information, especially by information that they *don't have.*. There are plenty of studies showing that premature babies who are breastfed have LESS bradycardia, less apnea, etc...Look at Paula Meier's work.....There was a study by Lucey, I believe , but I don't know the year. A simple search should come up with several articles that can disprove the incorrect theory that premature babies must bottlefeed first before they breastfeed. It is precisely this attitude of deliberate ignorance that is so disgusting to me. Is it any badge of honor to be ignorant regarding an important subject? Just makes me wonder "What else to some people choose *not* to be aware of. Does this guy refuse to wash his hands, too, because the theory of asepsis if a crock of excrement from male cows? : / Around here, I run into the same thing, and if anyone from my family was sick, I might think twice and try to get to a different hospital before I went to my local establishment. Do people ignore important info on diabetes, or cancer, or anything else? NO. They are more important than breastfeeding..RIGHT? Yes I am SHOUTING. Kathleen, disgusted in Vermont, and sick with a cold and fever to boot. Grrrr. I can stand people not *knowing*, but I cannot put up with people who have no desire to learn. The only thing bigger than their ignorance on breastfeeding and lactation related issues is the ego involved. I'd better be quiet now..... getting really steamed. Kathleen B.
