Laurie, There is an excellent notation in Galactopharmacopedia by Phil Anderson in, I believe, the March, 1996 (maybe Dec 95) issue of the JHL. He basically states that moms shouldn't bf for 2 hours after having a drink. I tell moms that according to the research (Julie Minella's, I think), that alcohol appears to peak in the milk about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes after a drink, and then slowly dissipates to be virtually non-detectible at 3 hours. Giving them that information, including the info that pumping & dumping will not hasten excretion, lets them make the decision on their own. Alcoholic beverages are a staple in many parts of the world where babies are bf; will an occasional glass of wine really cause major damage to an infant? I want bf to fit into the mom's lifestyle as much as a new baby will fit into her lifestyle. I don't want her to have to make major changes BECAUSE she is bf -- that thinking means that she won't bf for long. The docs in this area tend to put moms on such major restrictions while they are pg -- no caffeine, no alcohol, no Nutrasweet, no chocolate, no Diet Coke, no, no, no -- and this may not be all bad; but do we really want to treat bf the same as we do pg? If we put restrictions on her in that way, that aren't scientifically proven to be necessary, we run the risk of having her quit bf so she can get her own life back -- and then we have a baby on ABM instead of brmk with a smidge of caffeine. Which is worse? Just my .02 cents.... Jan Barger, from Wheaton where I think summer, which was here for 2 days, decided to go back into hibernation, and it is COLD again!
