My son started solids at about 9 months (his choice) but also at an
age when he didn't want to be spoonfed.  I used to buy icecream
cones and cut the thick tops off them, then fill the cone part with
mashed veges, stew or whetever he was eating.  He fed himself, had
fun smearing his face and waving his cone about, but he slurped,
sucked and ate at his own pace.  It was a very successful
intervention that I have passed on to many mothers.  He didn't have
icecream in his cone till much later as I was deliberately delaying
dairy products.
