Alicia: I once had a mother tell me that she first put her baby to breast at three weeks pp. She had had no intentions of nursing when he was born and had taken medications to dry up her milk. Well, the meds didn't work and she didn't know what to do about all that milk, so in desperation she put the baby to her breast and he latched on like a pro! She went on to nurse all her subsequent children and is a great advocate for breastfeeding.
Good luck when you see your colleague's new baby. It sounds likely that nipple confusion, maybe with incorrect positioning, is at the root of the problem. Let us know how it turns out!
