Kris,
Sometimes when an infant has a really weak suck, using a syringe and 5 french
feeding tube at the breast to deliver a bolus when the suck pressure decreases
or the infant pauses too long can be effective. Mom may be able to deliver a
bolus with the SNS by squeezing the bottle. The small amount that drips from
the tubes may not be enough to stimulate a hypotonic baby.
Other helps for hypotonic infants are positioning them in flexion (for
added stability); gently stroking under the chin (sublingual stimulation) to
encourage tongue movements; and global measures to increase muscle tone such
as massage, and rocking or bouncing through the spine before feeding.
