Pat,
I've also seen this at clinic, and heard of other cases. To be best of my
knowledge, there isn't a lot that can be done except to keep the breast
warm. Usually the nipple will blanch along with the pain, and may fade in
and out. Keeping one breast covered while using the other, and drying and
"putting away" the other breast quickly, or placing a warm compress on it
after feeding, may help alleviate the pain. Indeed, warmth seems to be
the painkiller more than anything else. She might also consider wearing
nursing pads or padding her bra with cut-out cloth diaper, etc, to block
penetration of cold air through her clothing.
