Regarding Roberta's question of one breast feeding and reduced incident of engorgement/plugged ducts.... I am finding from experience--not from any study that I can recall-- that when milk is more throrughly moved through the breast every other time rather than partially moved every time, that there are fewer "back-up" related difficulties. I suggest that am mother who is especially full on the un-nursed breast gently express to comfort on that full breast on an as-needed basis. Her body will adapt rapidly. Having a complete meal on one breast seems to allow more complete flow and more comfortable result. This is not engraved in stone. There are cases for which I do suggest that a mother offer both breasts. But such instances are based on trying to remedy a particular problem. Pardee H. HInson, MPH, IBCLC Charlotte, NC
