Diane, I taught childbirth classes before I was an LC. I started priming students for breastfeeding in the first class, when discussing adaptations to pregnancy, I explained breast changes and stated that they are one of the first changes that occur because human milk is vital to the infant's immature nervous, digestive and immune systems. That little seed often bore fruit in moms who never intended to breastfeed. I made sure not to ask how anyone planned to feed their babies until later in the series, so no one could feel I was trying to 'convert' them. I also brought my own babies to class and nursed discreetly while I taught. They were great advertising, and did not mind acting as demonstration models as necessary! Catherine Watson Genna, IBCLC
